Women's Stroke Awareness

While the month of May shines a light on many women’s health topics, one very important subject that should not be overlooked is stroke. The recent death of 52-year-old actor Luke Perry shocked the country when it was revealed that a massive stroke claimed his life.

May is National Stroke Awareness Month. We talked to Dr. Nitza Alvarez at the Tri-County Heart Institute about what women need to know about stroke.

Also, on a special note, Hometown Health congratulates Dr. Nitza Alvarez on the publishing of her first book, Heels vs Ties: Living With Your #1 Threat written to explain and punctuate the dramatic difference in causes, symptoms and treatments for female heart conditions versus male heart conditions.

The book is available for purchase in paperback or digital download on Amazon.com or at HeelsvsTies.com

Sleep For Your Heart

Sleep is essential for a healthy heart. People who don't sleep enough are at higher risk for cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease, regardless of age, weight, smoking and exercise habits.

We talked to Dr. Nitza Alvarez, cardiologist at Tri-County Heart Institute to find out why sleep is so important for our cardiovascular health.

Also, as part of her year-round commitment to help you stay heart healthy, you can join Dr. Alvarez every second Saturday of the month for Walk With a Doc. Participants will enjoy a brief presentation on an important health topic followed by a “walk-at-your-own-pace” lead by Dr. Alvarez.
