Healthier U: Hurricane Kit Essentials

After the historic 2004 hurricane season, many Floridians got a hurricane kit wake up call.

But at the halfway point of the 2009 season, when it comes to water and medications, are you sure you have the right supplies and enough of them?

•  Having an ample supply of clean water is a top priority in an emergency.

•  Your kit should contain a minimum three-day supply and consider storing a two-week supply of water for each member of your family.

•  According to the Centers for Disease Control, you should have one gallon for each person and pet per day needing access to water in your home.

•  And don’t forget to store water for food preparation and hygiene -- at least an additional half-gallon per person, per day.

Still not sure which supplies you’ll need and how much to stock?

The Florida Division of Emergency Management offers an online program where you can create your own family disaster plan online.

After registering for this free site, it will generate your family’s disaster preparedness plan with specific information on the amount of supplies you’ll need.

You can access the Florida Division of Emergency Management’s family disaster plan. The American Red Cross also offers a comprehensive emergency preparedness brochure.
