Colonoscopy Consultation

Colorectal cancer is the third-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States according to the American Cancer Society. Unlike many other forms of cancer, colon cancer is one of the most preventable cancers if it is detected early.

Well after ten years of hosting Hometown Health, preaching about the importance of early detection, host, Marc Robertz, hit that age milestone when a colonoscopy is first recommended. His journey began with an initial consultation with Dr Jason Smith - a relatively new addition to the AdventHealth Waterman general surgery team. Researchers out of the University of Missouri-Kansas City found that smiling not only makes you feel good, it also makes you look younger and thinner. Additional research shows that smiling can help elevate your mood by releasing endorphins. Added bonus: those endorphins serve as natural pain relievers and act as the body's own opiates.

Scrutinizing Supplements

If you were thinking that taking a few supplements might help you reach some of your New Year’s wellness goals, we have some concerning information you should be aware of.

Researchers from the California Department of Public Health recently discovered that hundreds of dietary supplements sold in the US contain unapproved and potentially dangerous pharmaceutical ingredients.

They published their findings recently in the journal JAMA Network Open.

A new report released from the CDC finds that the number of children getting vaccinated is declining.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that while more than 90 percent of children between ages 19 and 35 months were vaccinated in 2017, there were opportunities for improvement.

AFM On The Rise

A mysterious polio-like disease is on the rise in parts of the US, and the cause continues to elude scientists. The rare disease is being called acute flaccid myelitis or AFM, and mostly strikes young children.

Initial symptoms of AFM are similar to those of a severe respiratory illness and can lead to respiratory failure.
