Love Your Heart…For A Change

While we're focusing on Diabetes Awareness this month, last month was National Heart Health Month. Hometown Health attended Florida Hospital Waterman's annual Cardiac Wellness Fair “Love Your Heart…For A Change”.

The Fair not only highlighted the importance of cardiac wellness, but it also focused on food, nutrition and Diabetes education.

March 27th is American Diabetes Association Alert Day. It's a one-day "wake-up call” asking the American public to take the Diabetes Risk Test to find out if they are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. How prevalent is diabetes in the US?  The American Diabetes Association estimates nearly 26 million Americans, or 8% of our population, has diabetes.

Here are some other eye-opening statistics:

•    People with pre-diabetes conditions account for another 79 million people
•    1 in 400 children have diabetes
•    Nearly 27% of seniors 65 and older have diabetes
•    Diabetes cost the US $174 Billion in direct and indirect medical expenses in 2007

And, there’s even more information about the prevalence, prevention, statistics and impact on your health when you view the 2011 National Diabetes Fact Sheet from the CDC.

Hometown Health and Healthy Living Magazine were proud media sponsors of “ALL THAT JAZZ”, Lake-Sumter Community College Foundation's 27th Annual Gala Auction. Held at The Villages Savannah Center, guests were treated to a gourmet dinner, a silent auction, and a live auction.  Beverly and I, along with a couple of our Hometown Health Specialists, took part in supporting higher education in our community.

Our thanks to all the sponsors and attendees.  Proceeds from the event go to LSCC student scholarships and college initiatives to help the students reach their dreams.

Team Hometown Health was on hand as media sponsor for the second consecutive year at the ERA Tom Grizzard “Driving For a Cure” golf scramble at Harbor Hills, benefiting local efforts in the fight against Muscular Dystrophy.

We also talked with Owner/Broker Gus Grizzard about how such community involvement may have played into his agency receiving unprecedented top national ERA honors again this year.
